• The Color Purple Wins Tony Award For Best Revival Of A Musical

    The Color Purple won the Tony Award last night for Best Revival of a Musical. The production premiered at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory in 2013, and Tanya is delighted to be one of the producers who have brought this heartfelt show to Broadway. The production stars British actress Cynthia Erivo making her Broadway debut - who also won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical - as Celie, Orange is the Black star Danielle Brooks as Sofia, and Tony and Grammy Award winner Heather Headley. There were also nominations for Brooks for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and for John Doyle for Best Director of a Musical. The Color Purple is now running at the Jacobs Theatre.

    Sunny Afternoon Extends Again

    Due to public demand, the multi-Olivier award-winning hit British musical Sunny Afternoon has announced another extension to its West End run, until 29 October 2016. The extension will take the show’s West End run past the two year mark. The critically-acclaimed new musical tells the story of the early life of Ray Davies and the rise to stardom of The Kinks. It has established itself as a firm favourite with audiences and critics alike since it opened at the Harold Pinter Theatre in October 2014. Ray Davies said: "I am delighted that Sunny Afternoon is extending. Every time I visit the show I see people discovering it for the first time with the performances going from strength to strength.”

    The Broadway transfer of the National Theatre’s stage adaptation of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time won five Tony Awards at last nights’ ceremony at Radio City Music Hall, including the coveted Best Play prize. The show’s other well deserved wins are Best Direction of a Play for Marianne Elliott, Best Scenic Design of a Play for Bunny Christie and Finn Ross, Best Lighting Design of a Play for Paule Constable and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Alex Sharp. The show marks Alex Sharp’s professional stage debut, and he is the youngest winner in the history of the Best Actor award. The production is now running at the Barrymore Theatre.

    The Sun Shines On Sunny Afternoon At Olivier Awards

    Sunny Afternoon has walked away with the coveted MasterCard Best New Musical prize at the Olivier Awards 2015, together with three other awards - more than any other show this year. The hit musical, which charts the euphoric rise of The Kinks, also won Best Actor in a Musical for John Dagleish, Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for George Maguire, with The Kink’s Ray Davies winning the Outstanding Achievement in Music Award. The critically acclaimed show, directed by Edward Hall, opened at Hampstead Theatre in April 2014 before transferring to the Harold Pinter Theatre, where it currently resides, in October the same year. The show is Hampstead Theatre’s first musical, and Tanya Link Productions has been involved along with Sonia Friedman Productions since the first workshop.

    A galaxy of good humoured stars turned out for the West End opening of Forbidden Broadway last night, in this loving and hilarious satire that has audiences and critics in stitches. YouTube sensation Christina Bianco joins existing cast members Anna Janey-Casey, Damian Humbley and Ben Lewis for the 10 week season at the Vaudeville Theatre, following a sold out run at the Menier Chocolate Factory earlier this summer. Guests at last night’s opening included Robert Lindsay, Barbara Windsor, Don Black, Derren Brown, Frank Skinner and Maria Friedman.

    A Big Night For Twelfth Night At The Drama Desk Awards

    Winners of the 59th Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced in New York last night, where the Shakespeare’s Globe productions of Twelfth Night and Richard III played extended seasons in rep this past winter. Following sold out runs at Shakespeare’s Globe and in the West End, director Tim Carrol’s productions, with all male casts lead by Olivier and Tony winner Mark Rylance, transferred to Broadway’s Belasco Theatre in December. Twelfth Night picked up three Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Revival of a Play, with Tim Carroll winning for Outstanding Director of a Play and Jenny Tiramani winning for Outstanding Costume Design.

    TLP Triumphs At The Olivier Awards

    TLP shows were richly rewarded at last night’s Laurence Olivier Awards, with nine wins in total for ChimericaGhosts and Merrily We Roll Along, including Best New Play, Best Revival and Best Musical Revival. Maria Friedman’s production of Merrily We Roll Along won for Best Musical Revival, with Sound Designer Gareth Owen sharing the Best Sound Design Award with Carolyn Downing for Chimerica. Lucy Kirkwood’s play about relations between China and the West also picked up awards for Best New Play, Best Director for Lyndsey Turner, Best Lighting Design for Tim Lutkin and Finn Ross and Best Set Design for Es Devlin. Richard Eyre’s acclaimed production of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts won the award for Best Revival, with acting honours going to Lesley Manville for Best Actress, and Jack Lowdon for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The awards took place at the Royal Opera House and were hosted by Gemma Arterton and Stephen Mangan.

    Rylance and Co. Begin Broadway Rehearsals

    Rehearsals began on Monday, September 16 in London for the critically heralded all-male Shakespeare’s Globe repertory productions of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and Richard III on Broadway this fall. The productions open Sunday, November 10 at the Belasco Theatre (111 West 44th Street), with previews beginning October 15. The productions directed by Tim Carroll, designed by Jenny Tiramani and with music by Claire van Kampen, will play a limited engagement for 16 weeks.
